Many of our patients feel apprehensive about the prospect of wearing hearing aids but feel much better once they are aware of the options available to them.

Today’s modern hearing aids are technologically advanced with a range of discreet fitting styles. The right hearing aid expertly tailored to your needs can help improve your hearing and make you feel more connected.

Hearing loss can make people feel stressed, anxious and frustrated. If you’re struggling to be part of conversations and feel that your ability to hear properly is not as good as it should be, our clinical audiologist Laura and the team at Cathedral Hearing can help. Remember, hearing aids can only work if you have some hearing capacity left so do not hesitate to have a proper hearing assessment to discover what devices can help you, especially if you feel your hearing is getting worse. Here are some points to consider and useful information to help you move forward when considering hearing aids:

What is a hearing aid?

Hearing aids are small electronic devices that have been specially designed to enhance the volume and clarity of sounds.

The main parts of a hearing aid are a microphone to collect the sounds around you, a chip which acts as the ‘brain’ of the hearing aid, an amplifier to increase the volume and clarity of the sounds and a small speaker which transmits the amplified sounds into the ear.

Cleverly, hearing aids can also reduce unwanted background noise to help you focus on the sounds you want to hear. At Cathedral Hearing we offer a wide range of styles and types of hearing aids and will use our expertise to make the very best recommendation for you as an individual.

We offer all the leading brands of hearing aids.

As we are an independent practice, we offer all the leading brands of hearing aids. Unlike some of the high-street chains, we are not tied in or owned by any hearing aid manufacturers, meaning that you will be offered the best solution for your prescription, needs, preferences and budget. It also means that if you have a particular brand in mind or have been seen by another provider in the past, we can meet your needs.

We will guide you

Our clinical audiologist Laura is highly experienced in guiding her patients to make an informed choice and will take time to explain the options.  Quality of hearing is our top priority, and it is important we get this right.  We also understand that cosmetics, physical fit, ease of use, connectivity to other devices, reliability and value for money are important factors and we will take time to understand your priorities.

Styles of Hearing Aids

Receiver in the canal (RIC)

Receiver in the canal hearing aids are an excellent solution for patients with a wide range of hearing losses ranging from mild to profound. They are particularly effective if a patient has good low frequency hearing but needs help with mid and high frequency amplification as they can be fitted with an open ear tip which does not block the ear and gives a natural sound quality.

They also have good noise reduction capabilities due to the positioning of the directional microphones on the ear.  They are also available in rechargeable models for fuss free charging without the need for fiddly batteries. Having said that, some of our patients prefer disposable batteries, which we can accommodate.

Completely in the canal hearing aids

Completely in the canal hearing aids are suitable for people with mild to moderate hearing loss and are very compact and discreet.  They can either be custom fitted to the shape of the ear or come in a rechargeable ‘instant fit’ style in the form of the Signia Silk model.  They appeal to patients with concerns about cosmetics or physical fit as they do not have anything behind the ear.  They also come in a range of technology levels with a features and benefits to suit different lifestyles.

Invisible in the canal hearing aids

Similar to completely in the canal hearing aids but sit more deeply in the canal making them even more discreet.

Earbud hearing aids

Suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss

Ready to wear hearing aids which are designed to look like premium consumer earbuds.  An ideal solution for patients who do not want to feel like they are wearing a hearing aid but want the features and performance of a medical grade hearing aid.

In the ear hearing aids

Custom made in the ear hearing aids, which fit the shape of the ear.  Can be fitted in an ‘in the canal’ style or ‘full shell’ style depending on the prescription.  These hearing aids have directional microphones for noise reduction and are suitable for a range of hearing losses but are not as effective if the patient has good low frequency hearing as they can cause a blocked feeling and make the sound less natural.

Power or ultra power behind the ear hearing aids

Often the most suitable option for severe to profound hearing losses and can be fitted with high quality custom fitted earmoulds to maximise amplification and minimise interference and feedback.
